The Azzurri won their fourth World Cup after a tense 5-3 penalty shoot-out, not long after France captain Zinedine Zidane was sensationally sent off. Fabio Grosso stroked home the winning penalty after France's David Trezeguet had missed. The result capped an incredible period for Italian
football, with the domestic game embroiled in a corruption scandal
similar to 1982 when they last won the World Cup. Cannavaro lifted the biggest trophy of them all as Italy became the most successful European country in World Cup history. Cannavaro was voted player of the tournament by FIFA and later became the first defender to ever win the FIFA World player of the year to cap a remarkable year for the 33 year old Real Madrid player.
